RIDER TRAINING

Need a Motorcycle licence? learn to ride a Motorcycle,
Compulsory Basic Training, Accompany Rider Training, and refresher courses

The UK law states that before you can ride a Motorcycle on the road with L plates you must have either:
1) A provisional Motorcycle licence, and take a CBT (Compulsory Basic Training) test.
or
2) A Provisional Motorcycle entitlement on a full car licence, and take a CBT (Compulsory Basic Training) test. However if you passed your car driving test before 1st Feb 2001 you don't have to take the CBT test to ride up to a 49cc Motorcycle, although it is advised.

49cc	16	Provisional	CBT	L Plates	No pillion passengers, Must not go onto the motorway, Bike must be restricted to 30mph.
Up to 125cc	17	Provisional	CBT	L Plates	No pillion passengers, Must not go onto the motorway, Bike must be restricted to 14.6 BHP*.
Any	17	Full Motorcycle	CBT, Theory & Full	Maximum 33 BHP**	Bike must be restricted to 33 BHP.**

Your CBT certificate and Theory certificate is valid for two years, you must pass your full Motorcycle test within this period otherwise you need to take them again.

*You can practice on up to 46.6 BHP on a provisional licence if you are over 21 years of age, but only when accompanied by a fully qualified instructor.

**When you are over the age of 17 and have passed your full Motorcycle test you are licensed to ride any cc Motorcycle without L plates restricted to 33BHP for a two year period, after this period your licence is upgraded then you're free to ride any BHP Motorcycle.

ART (Accompany Rider Training) is the term used for Motorcycle lessons to practice your riding skills ready for your DSA (Driving Standards Agency) test, of course you need your CBT beforehand.
